
Dr. Vernescu is currently Professor of mathematical sciences and the Vice Provost for Research. His research focuses on applied mathematics for multiscale materials sciences, specifically characterizing the material properties of composites, porous media, suspensions, emulsions, and electrorheological/magnetorheological materials. He was appointed Vice Provost for Research in 2016 and Vice President for Research and Innovation in 2024, with the goal of enhancing faculty research efforts and increasing support for research at WPI from state and federal government agencies, corporations, and supporting WPI's innovation ecosystem. Dr. Vernescu earned BS and MS degrees in applied mathematics from the University of Bucharest and a PhD in mathematics from the Institute of Mathematics in Romania.
Dr. Vernescu has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2019.
