ASSISTments for Algebra Readiness

This national research study offers districts an opportunity to understand how pairing
ASSISTments with high-quality, curriculum-based professional learning from Teaching Lab can strengthen students’ readiness for Algebra. By joining the study, participating educators receive complimentary access to ASSISTments, ongoing coaching and professional learning, and stipends for completing research activities—all in service of improving math outcomes for middle school students.

We are currently recruiting 6th- and 7th-grade math teachers and coaches who use Illustrative Mathematics (Open Up) or Eureka Math (EngageNY).

Why ASSISTments + Teaching Lab? A Powerful
Combination.

Teaching Lab specializes in curriculum-based professional learning, using its evidence-based Head, Heart & Habits model. They envision a world where teachers and students thrive together in communities that foster lifelong learning and lead to meaningful lives.

ASSISTments is a research-based, formative assessment math platform that turns daily practice into powerful moments of independent problem-solving for students and provides real-time data to guide the teacher’s instructional decision-making.

Together, this partnership aims to help students build the conceptual understanding and confidence they need to succeed in Algebra I, one of the strongest predictors of college and career readiness.

Prior research has shown an independent impact of:

  • High-quality instructional materials
  • ASSISTments usage
  • High-quality professional learning and coaching

This study asks a timely and important question: What happens when districts combine all three?

We aim to demonstrate that combining high-quality instructional materials, ASSISTments usage, and Teaching Lab support will improve middle school math achievement

Participation Details

The study will take place during the 2026–27 school year. Participating schools will be selectedthrough a lottery to receive either immediate access to ASSISTments and the Teaching Labprogram (the immediate treatment group) or a one-year delay in access.

During the 2026-27 school year, all schools will participate in the data collection for the study

Eligibility

Participating districts and teachers must meet the following criteria:

  • Public School District or Charter School Network in the US
  • Districts sign a research MOU and Services Agreement, agreeing to support project activities and to share student demographic and outcome data
  • 6th and 7th-grade general education math teachers are:
    • Willing to participate in the one-day Summer Bootcamp;
    • Willing to participate in weekly 1:1 coaching and monthly professional learning;
    • Willing and able to consistently use ASSISTments; and
    • Willing to complete teacher research activities and administer student pre-/post-tests in math class.
  • Students are able to complete internet-based math classwork or homework
  • We do NOT require all teachers in a grade level to participate. It would be ideal to have at least 2 teachers in a school participate in research activities.

Using ASSISTments During the Study

ASSISTments is a research-based, formative assessment math platform used nationally by over 2,000 teachers and 100,000 students last year. Watch this video.

Participating teachers will follow 4 simple steps

  1. Select and assign problems online in ASSISTments. Watch this video.
  2. Have students complete their assignments. They receive immediate feedback on the correctness of their response, and multiple attempts to get it right. See Walkthrough
  3. Review the assignment report. Actionable data insights, including common incorrect answers, help teachers monitor student progress and plan future lessons. See a walkthrough of the assignment report. See a walkthrough of the Class Report.
  4. Share class data with students to support their own reflection and growth, and engage inmath discussions.

Enabling Conditions

Enabling Conditions (for using ASSISTments):

  1. 1:1 in-school student devices per class, at a minimum.
    • Are there systems and mindsets in place to use technology?
  2. Teachers use one of the following LMSs: Google Classroom, Canvas, Moodle, Microsoft Teams, Schoology, Brightspace, Blackboard, or otherwise Edlink integrated LMS.
  3. Clear process for edTech use approval at the district or school level
    • Tech point person/lead
  4. (if required) Data privacy and compliance agreements completed
  5. (ideally) Teachers are not already mandated to use multiple digital tools during class time.

      years.
  2. Sacred time for professional learning and coaching for teachers
    • Eight 90-120 minute professional learning sessions completed on a cadence that works for the school. This may include virtual or in-person sessions, fewer full days, or multiple short sessions (45-60 minutes) to complete the two Cycles of Inquiry.
    • Allocated time and a clear schedule for classroom observations and debriefs with participating teachers
  3. Sacred time for coaching for the school’s math lead/coach to build instructional leadership capacity
    • The point-person/school-based coach will be the ASSISTments’ Insights Hub owner at each school
    • The school leader will meet regularly with the Teaching Lab Coach to ensure services are aligned with the school’s needs and priorities for math achievement.
  4. (Ideally) Use of student data to drive instruction.
