This national research study offers districts an opportunity to understand how pairing
ASSISTments with high-quality, curriculum-based professional learning from Teaching Lab can strengthen students’ readiness for Algebra. By joining the study, participating educators receive complimentary access to ASSISTments, ongoing coaching and professional learning, and stipends for completing research activities—all in service of improving math outcomes for middle school students.
We are currently recruiting 6th- and 7th-grade math teachers and coaches who use Illustrative Mathematics (Open Up) or Eureka Math (EngageNY).
Dec 2025 - May 2026: Districts/Charter Networks express interest, learn more, andconfirm participation. District signs Memorandum of Understanding and ServicesAgreement. Teachers and Coaches sign up by completing a consent form
Summer 2026: Schools are randomly assigned to the immediate or the delayed treatment group.
Immediate Treatment Group Implementation Activities: Participating teachers new to ASSISTments receive training
August 2026: Teachers and coaches participate in a 3–6 hour Curriculum Bootcamp onIllustrative Math or Eureka Math (EngageNY) and ASSISTments.
September 2026 - May 2027: Teachers and Coaches engage in weekly coaching, monthly professional learning, and use ASSISTments regularly.
August 2026: Districts/Networks send home Parent/Guardian Study Informational Form to caregivers in all participating classrooms. Teachers complete the Pre-survey and
Pre-Pedagogical Content Knowledge Assessment.
September 2026: Teachers administer the student pre-test in math class.
September 2026–May 2027: Teachers complete instructional logs (4), participate in a classroom observation (selected teachers), and participate in a virtual interview
(selected teachers).
Spring 2027: Administer the student post-test in math class.
May 2027: Teachers complete the Post-survey and Post-Pre-Pedagogical Content
Knowledge Assessment.
Delayed Treatment Group Implementation Activities:
August 2026: Teachers and coaches participate in a 3–6 hour Curriculum Bootcamp onIllustrative Math or Eureka Math (EngageNY) and ASSISTments.
September 2026 - May 2027: Teachers engage in weekly coaching, monthly professional learning, and use ASSISTments regularly.
Immediate Treatment Group teachers and coaches are welcome to continue usingASSISTments.
Teaching Lab specializes in curriculum-based professional learning, using its evidence-based Head, Heart & Habits model. They envision a world where teachers and students thrive together in communities that foster lifelong learning and lead to meaningful lives.
ASSISTments is a research-based, formative assessment math platform that turns daily practice into powerful moments of independent problem-solving for students and provides real-time data to guide the teacher’s instructional decision-making.
Together, this partnership aims to help students build the conceptual understanding and confidence they need to succeed in Algebra I, one of the strongest predictors of college and career readiness.

This study asks a timely and important question: What happens when districts combine all three?
We aim to demonstrate that combining high-quality instructional materials, ASSISTments usage, and Teaching Lab support will improve middle school math achievement
The study will take place during the 2026–27 school year. Participating schools will be selectedthrough a lottery to receive either immediate access to ASSISTments and the Teaching Labprogram (the immediate treatment group) or a one-year delay in access.
During the 2026-27 school year, all schools will participate in the data collection for the study
Participating districts and teachers must meet the following criteria:

This opportunity is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education and is being independently evaluated by WestEd, a nationally recognized nonprofit research, development, and service organization. Their study will help uncover how high-impact tools combined with exceptional professional learning can strengthen teaching and accelerate student learning. Review the research abstract and project flyer to learn more about how your district can participate.
We welcome interest forms from teachers, school administrators, or district administrators.
